The Lebrija palace, Seville

Built in the 16th century and subsequently remodelled in the 19th century, te Lebrija Palace is not simply a monument to a particular age or artistic style: its interior is branded wiht the life of the lady who once owned it, the Countess of Lebrija.

A visit to this private residence typical of Seville gives an idea of the organisation of Seville's palaces (vestibule, central patio with gallery and interior garden) and has a unique surprise; the pavement made of magnificent Roman mosaics comes from Italica.

All are superb, but look especially at those in the patio and those in the octogonal room for their shape. The patio also has elegant scalloped arches, piers and some alfiz of Arab influence, an astounding base of Seville tiles, and windows showing some archaeological remains.

The staircase is a pure joy, completely covered in tiles, with its mahogany ramp, marble steps and its superb Mud"tab ceiling which comes from a palace in Marchena.
